Corpus Christi native Kyle Barganski highlights home finale with first professional start as Sharks shift focus to final two regular-season matches
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (October 10, 2026) — Corpus Christi FC closed its home schedule Saturday night with a 1-0 defeat to FC Naples at Cabaniss Athletic Complex, as the Sharks were unable to find an equalizer after conceding in the 21st minute.
Despite the result, the night provided a milestone for hometown product Kyle Barganski, who earned his first professional start in the club’s final match at Cabaniss this season. The 18-year-old midfielder had made four previous USL League One appearances before entering Saturday’s starting lineup, which was the youngest Corpus Christi had fielded in league play this season.
The Sharks faced early pressure from Naples, with defenders Jack Keaney and Kaihim Thomas producing crucial blocks in the 5th minute to deny a trio of dangerous attempts inside the box. Corpus Christi gradually found its footing in attack, and Barganski nearly made an immediate impact in the 14th minute, collecting a cross from Thomas before forcing the Naples goalkeeper into a save near the left post.
Thomas and Parker Vasic followed with close-range attempts, while Thomas narrowly missed with a header in the 16th minute as the Sharks continued to build momentum.
Naples broke through in the 21st minute when Christopher Garcia set up Ty Collins who maneuvered past goalkeeper Mason McCready before finishing into the exposed net. Corpus Christi continued searching for an answer before halftime, with Tomas Pondeca sending a long-range effort just over the crossbar in the 43rd minute.
The Sharks carried their attacking pressure into the second half, earning consecutive corners shortly after the restart. Pondeca later sent a free kick over the crossbar in the 60th minute, while Blake Bowen helped disrupt a dangerous Naples attack with a defensive block in the 67th.
In the closing stages, Jake Keegan put a header on target in the 91st minute as Corpus Christi pushed for an equalizer, but FC Naples held firm to preserve its advantage and secure the victory.
Barganski’s debut start and the late introduction of 19-year-old James Parks in the 83rd minute offered opportunities for two of the club’s young players to gain valuable experience as the Sharks wrapped up their home campaign.
Following the match, Barganski reflected on the significance of making his first professional start in front of his hometown crowd.
“Obviously, it’s a surreal experience since I grew up here. And then my first start being the last home game, it was just an awesome feeling,” said Barganski. “All the guys were backing me, and it was just a great feeling.”
Head coach Eamon Zayed also praised Barganski’s performance, highlighting the midfielder’s composure and willingness to take on responsibility.
“I am really happy with how Kyle played. I thought he was excellent in that first half. He was brave on the ball and saw some really quality moments,” Zayed said. “James Parks came on and did well also. Both have a big future.”
The defeat, combined with Fort Wayne FC’s victory over Union Omaha earlier Saturday, mathematically eliminated Corpus Christi from playoff contention. The Sharks remain on 36 points with two regular-season matches remaining.
Zayed also reflected on the support the club received throughout its inaugural season, acknowledging the disappointment of being unable to deliver a victory in the home finale.
“The fans deserved it, so I’m sorry we couldn’t deliver that,” Zayed said. “Overall, the first season has been of highs and lows, but playing at home and seeing the faces support us has meant so much. In the end, at every team, players come and go, but what remains constant is the fans and the community. It will always be Corpus Christi’s team!”
The Sharks now turn their attention to their final two matches of the regular season as they look to close their inaugural USL League One campaign on a positive note.
Coming Up:
Corpus Christi FC will begin their final stretch of the regular season next Saturday, traveling to Richmond, Virginia, to face the Richmond Kickers at City Stadium on October 17.
